Textiles // Key Trends for Jersey-wear S/S '16

02:49

When researching into next years trends for Spring/Summer '16 on trend forecasting website www.wgsn.com, I came across a sourcing guide which helps to understand the key points and features of the textiles that will be used for jersey-wear in 2016.

The textiles used for jersey-wear focuses very much on the surface and finish of the textile and the general appearance. The surfacing and finishing of the textiles that will be seen in jersey-wear include: embossing, pearlised foil coatings, transfer print textures, net looks and soft, brush finishes. The prints and patterns included in the textiles are: openwork stripes, classical resort stripes, tiled mini geometrics, large-scale fluid graphics, abstract camouflage and soft, summer florals.

Print & Patterns // Fluid Graphics

Fine cotton and cotton blend knits are woven into optical patterns to deceive the eye and make the textile look more dimensional. On the other hand, offset patterns are also created with a slight distortion to portray a more softer approach. Watery, poolside shades of blue are brought in line with greens and greys to produce a modern and sophisticated colour palette. I like how the use of spiral lines and slanted square patterns gives the textiles a repetitive and decorative design.

Prints & Patterns // Tiled Geometrics

Discreet micro-pattern prints and jacquard prints continue to be key throughout jersey-wear. Traditional navy blue and grey colours are mixed with mustard yellows for a more updated, warmer approach. I like how the use of vibrant colours and oriented shapes gives the pattern a retro 1970s look.

Surface & Finish // Pearlised Effects

Iridescent finishes and liquid sheens are what to expect in jersey-wear for Spring/Summer '16. Pearlescent foils give fine, drapery knits texture by creating a shimmery surface on the textile. Whereas, light nylon and spandex jerseys combine metallic and pearl colours together to create a shine. I am personally loving the iridescent theme going on as the pearlescent colours represented are magical and reminds me of my childhood and being fascinated by mermaids.
