Amsterdam // Museums

During my time in Amsterdam I visited many museums but one that interested me the most was the 'Red Light Secrets: Museum of Prostitution'. The common words associated with prostitutes are "cheap", "tacky" and other vulgar words. However, the museum really opened my eyes into seeing how awful and sad it is that some of these young women are being lied to and lured into the industry and have no other option but to stay in it in order to earn money to survive.

The museum described in depth the struggles and reality that some of the women in prostitution had to face on a daily basis. The museum explained these struggles through signs and posters throughout where some of the prostitutes had spoke out about their personal true life stories.
The museum also explained in depth the fashion behind prostitution and what type of clothing the women in the industry have to wear.

"For prostitutes, clothing has a special purpose. Not specifically used to keep yourself warm or to cover up your body, but more than anything to create a sexy appearance. Clothing is also often used to communicate to potential clients you are in 'in business'. They often take up the role of trendsetter: newly available sexy clothing is often first worn by prostitutes."

In the above image you can see the mannequins wearing bralet/bustier crop tops, long velvet gloves, suspenders and over-the-knee laced-up high heeled boots.
