Psychedelic Trend // Hippie Subculture

03:06

I have chosen to write a blog post on the Hippie Subculture because the concept of psychedelia derives from the subculture and my Spring/Summer 2016 trend is based around the Psychedelic trend.

The 1960's Hippie subculture involved a variety of social concerns and beliefs. The Hippies believed that life was about being happy and not about what others thought you should be. Hippies believed the dominant mainstream culture was corrupt and sought to replace it with a Utopian society.

Hippies were often vegetarian and believed in eco friendly environmental practices. They championed free love and sexual liberation; particularly for women. Hippies participated in alternative arts and street theatre and listened to folk music and psychedelic rock as part of their anti-establishment lifestyle. They opposed political and social violence and promoted a gentle ideology that focused on peace and love.

Hippies dressed in what they believed was a statement of who you were, including brightly coloured, ragged clothes, tie-dyed T-shirts, beads, sandals (or barefoot) and jewellery; all of which served to differentiate from the segments of mainstream society.

The peace symbol became the Hippies official logo. Hippies often drove Volkswagen buses painted with colourful graphics. They're gypsy-like travel habits also meant many hitchhiked to get to and from major Hippie events.
